When the alleged father is unavailable, unwilling, or no post-mortem sample exists, a Single Grandparentage DNA Test can provide clarity. By comparing the DNA of one paternal grandparent with the child (and mother when available), the lab can calculate the probability of grandparentage.

This test is less powerful than testing both grandparents but still provides valuable information to help determine family relationships.

Who Needs to Be Tested

• One (1) Mother

• One (1) Child

• One (1) Paternal Grandparent (either the mother [PM] or father [PF] of the Alleged Father [AF])

Turnaround Time

• Standard: 5 business days from receipt of all samples

Chain-of-Custody Testing (For Legal Purposes)

For results admissible in court or legal disputes (such as inheritance or immigration):

• Samples collected by a neutral third party (clinic or laboratory)

• Positive ID verified with government-issued ID, photo, and/or fingerprinting

• Standard DDC kit required

• Client Identification & Consent Form (COC-4002) signed by all parties

• Guardianship of minor verified at time of signing

• Clients may not possess the kit before or after collection

Non-Chain-of-Custody Testing (For Personal Knowledge)

For families seeking results only for peace of mind:

• At-home buccal (cheek swab) kit provided

• Samples collected by the tested individuals themselves

• Results not valid for legal purposes

• Names listed exactly as written on samples

• Unique barcode assigned to each kit for reference and account tracking

Important Notes

• Mother’s participation is strongly encouraged to help account for one-half of the child’s genetic material and improve accuracy.

• If only one grandparent is available, the grandmother is preferred over the grandfather, when possible.

• In some cases, results may be inconclusive; the lab may recommend testing additional relatives. Future testing will incur additional costs.
